Welcome back Crafters! I hope everyone is staying safe while we try to flatten the curve of this unfortunate corona virus. I know some people are still required to go to work and face mask are hard to find, so I would like to share with you how to make a homemade face mask.
If you’re like me and your sewing machine is out of commission or you don’t have a sewing machine at home, don’t worry this tutorial is for you! I’m going to show you how to make this face mask with out a sewing machine. I also provide my free SVG and printable pattern as a download at the end of this post! However, the pattern can be used with a sewing machine as well.
Supplies you will need:
- face mask pattern/svg (forever free files)
- fabric/terry cloth
- fabric glue
- scissors
- ribbon/elastic 1/4″ wide
- needle & thread
- printer
- paper
- pen
(At this point you can be creative and find material inside your home: old shirts, towels, tea towels, scarfs etc.)
First you will need to print out my PDF pattern and cut it out with your scissors.
Then trace the pattern on the back of your material with a pen.
Do the same to your terry cloth or the material you chose for your back piece of your face mask.
Next, overlay both your materials with the outer fabric facing inward. (See image below for reference).
The image below shows you where we are going to apply the fabric glue first. Along the top and bottom of the face mask.
Apply a line of glue fairly close to the edge. Then press them firmly together. Let this dry for at least 2 hours.
Next, let’s cut the elastic or ribbon for your ear loops. You may use a ruler and cut it at 5.5 inches for an adult mask or you can use the pattern length that came with the PDF. (You may change this length to fit your needs).
After glue has dried, turn your mask right side out.
See image on how to fold in side flaps so trimmed edges do not show. Also to see where to apply the glue.
While you apply the glue, add in the edges of the elastic. Do this to both sides.
Next, press the edges down firmly. Use a pin to hold the elastic in place. Let dry for another 2 hours.
Once dried, remove pins and use a needle and thread to secure elastic in place. (see image below).
Now you have your finished face mask made with out a sewing machine!
I hope you enjoyed this tutorial, grab the pattern below! Stay safe out there and God bless!
Note: Wait 48 hours before you wash and use your mask. Choose a Fabric glue that is permanent, washable and non-toxic.
