Personalized Graduation Cake Topper with Cricut

Graduation season is upon us, so that means graduation parties!! To help you with your graduation needs, I designed a Congrats Graduation Cake Topper that you can personalize in Cricut Design Space.  You’ll have a beautiful layered cake topper for your graduation celebration!

These will work great for school promotions as well! I’m going to use these for my daughters this year, one is getting promoted to middle school and my youngest is graduating kinder!

If you are new to layered cake toppers, they can be made out of most types of cardstock.  Cake toppers tend to have many single pieces that you need to layer together with foam tape.  This graduation cake topper is great if you run a small crafting business, you can personalize each topper with the graduates name and school colors. If you don’t want to use a name you can put “CLASS OF 2023” or “GRAD” or “GRADUATE”.

Supply List: 

• Cricut machine
• Congrats Graduation SVG
• Cardstock (black, dark gray, light gray, white)
• Glitter Cardstock (sliver)
• Foil Cardstock (gold)
• Foam tape
• Bearly Art Craft Glue
• Wooden Skewers
• Hot Glue Gun

Once you have the SVG downloaded, unzip the file by right-clicking on the folder and hit “extract all”, then save it to the same location.  Upload the SVG file to design space.  If you are having trouble locating the SVG file type, please watch this video for help.

Add the graduation cake topper to your canvas, resize the cake topper to your own preference.  I resized mine to 8 inch in width.  Ungroup the SVG to change the colors of each layer.  You will have 2 layers of the back of the cake topper, this is to conceal the wooden skewers.

 

Next, use the text tool to add the graduates name. I used the font Arial Bold, and changed the letter spacing to move the letters closer.  Then make a Offset and slide the dot to the left to get the offset closer but making sure all the letters are over lapping, then click apply.

 

Now you can change the color of your text and offset to match your cake topper.  Send it to the mat and get ready to cut.

 

I cut my cardstock on Cardstock+ and for my glitter cardstock, cut on Custom > glitter cardstock.  Before assembling the whole cake topper, assemble each element first. Layer the graduation cap and diploma using foam tape, use the craft glue for the tassel to the cap.

 

For the wording use foam type to layer it over it’s offset.

 

Once you have the graduation cap, diploma and wording assembled,  you can begin to layer each piece on the whole cake topper backing.  It’s best to start at the bottom and work your way up.  Start with the diploma, then white banner, congrats, then cap, and the name last.

 

Use hot glue to adhere the skewers to the back of the cake topper.  Also place two layers of foam tape on back of the T and C of congrats and at the top of the Graduation cap, then place the back cover over to hide the skewers.
