Hello my creative friends, Halloween is approaching soon and it’s time to plan out your family costumes! I thought it would be fun to share my past years family Halloween costumes in hopes to inspire some DIY costumes ideas.
My family started this tradition when I had my youngest daughter in 2017, we are a family of 7, so finding Halloween family costumes for a big family has been challenging! There might as well be 10 of us!!! With 2020 being a difficult year, we decided not to dress up that year. However, here are 5 fun family Halloween costume ideas!
The Addams Family DIY Costumes
The Addams Family is always a great idea for easy family costumes! They have many characters to choose from, like cousin Itt to uncle Fester. But, when you have two sons and two daughters that want to be the same thing, you opt for two Wednesdays and two Pugsleys.
For Gomez Addams, my husband just wore his gray suit with a glued Thing to his shoulder. I wore a long black dress with a black hair wig for Morticia. For Pugsley Addams, my sons wore a black and white stripe shirt with black shorts. My daughters wore a black dress with a white collared shirt underneath for Wednesday. And my cute baby girl wore a gray baby sweat-suit with a glued spider on the left top pocket for Pubert.
DIY Coco Family Costumes
I had alot of fun painting my kids faces for this Coco family themed Halloween costumes! Good quality face-paint is key to a successful costume, Snazaroo has always been my favorite!
I used my Cricut to add skeleton bones to black shirts and leggings!
For Miguel, all you need is a pair of jeans and a red zip-up hoodie. For Mama Coco, I made a cheaper version of a Mexican embroidered shirt, with a printable vinyl.
Ernesto de la Cruz, was fun to make, I created a guitar prop and sombrero out of cardboard and decorated it with silver vinyl!
Stranger Things Costumes
Stanger Things has so many fun characters to choose from for family costume ideas! If you are a Stanger Things fan or just love 80’s nostalgia, this can be fun for your family to do. I pulled these 80’s attire costumes together with mostly items I had at home, with the exception of Eleven’s iconic outfit and Dustin’s hat.
My glue gun came in handy for Suzie’s pajamas and Steve’s Ahoy uniform! You can find a white sailor hat on Amazon, I added the Ahoy logo with HTV, and lined white ribbon to the sleeves and shorts.
Max from Stanger things, is super easy to do with shorts and a striped shirt!
I have to say, I love how cute my kids look as Dusty buns and Suzie poo!
The Avengers Costumes
Another great family costume idea is to dress as characters from The Avengers! Some characters you can create yourself like Star Lord and Gamora, but it was much easier for me to get some of my kids superhero costumes from Walmart and Target.
My eldest son chose to dress up as the villain Red Skull, and eldest daughter is The Wasp.
The twins are Captain Marvel and Black Panther, and my youngest is Black Widow.
I was very happy with how my husband’s and my costumes came out of Star Lord and Gamora, which also makes a great couples Halloween costume!
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Costumes
Last year my family dressed up as the classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which I think was our best costumes yet! I did order 3 of the Halloween costumes for Willy Wonka, Violet and my daughter’s Oompa Loompa dress.
For Charlie, my son wore a blue turtle neck, and I made him a golden ticket out of gold cardstock. My eldest daughter wore a red dress for Veruca and held a golden egg we got from Ryan’s World toy.
The twins dressed up as cowboy Mike and Violet! I created Mike’s shirt by adding fringe to a yellow button up, found some western toy guns and hat to complete his outfit.
When I get the chance, I like to DIY most of my Halloween costumes, but sometimes it cheaper to buy the actually Halloween costume. I was able to create my own Oompa Loompa costume with a white tennis skirt and brown long sleeve shirt, I just added some ribbon and buttons.
